How little it takes

To give someone a boost. On Saturday, my husband drove us both to see an astounding vista of the Mourne mountains. We sat there watching the sun shine on the snowcapped mountains and our spirits rose. Yesterday, all I had to say to our daughter was ‘Moon Gelato’ and the sun came out with her smile.

Are you or someone you know walking with your head down, cloaked in darkness? Can you think of anything, no matter how small, that can give them or yourself, a reason to enjoy life, even if just for a minute?

The other day, I cycled past an elderly man who was delighted to see me out. I’m not sure I knew him but his genuine, joyful response was enough to pick me up for the rest of the day. I wish I could have thanked him for that. It costs nothing to encourage someone else but it could mean the world to them. I sometimes feel like I overegg my praise of other people, but really, where’s the harm in that?

So take a look round and have a think. What can you do or say to lift your neighbour? Even on a rainy, dark day? Even when they can’t see anything to be happy about? Take the challenge and lift someone today. Don’t let their long face put you off- you have the power to change that. And even if it doesn’t work, it will make you feel better for having tried.
