Do you ever feel everything in your world is moving too fast? And you are left searching for something solid to hold onto?
Sometimes I put the brakes on my rollator because I don’t like the way it rolls away from me. Years ago when my son was having dizzy spells, his dad encouraged him to put his hand on the wall, for something unmoving to lean against. When I’m getting back to the house, I often put my hand out to the very unattractive metal rail beside the step because it doesn’t move.
The one problem with searching for something immoveable is that eventually you will have to move away from it. It feels safer to stand still but can get lonely when everyone else leaves you behind. That’s the challenge: do you stay in the safety or step into the unknown?
The one thing that helps me when things are moving too fast is rooting myself into the knowledge of an almighty, unchanging God who is holding me. When the world looks like it is crumbling, when your life is sinking, when the things you thought would never change suddenly slip away, remember that God is your safe place, your steadfast foothold. That certainty is such a help to me. In Psalm 18 v 2 it says ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.’ Maybe that sounds like something you can’t comprehend, but let it settle in your mind next time you feel the storms in your life are rising. It’s the one true thing I know and I hope it becomes true for you too
