Laughter lives longer

weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.(Psalm 30v5)

The best memories I have are of long-gone people laughing. One of my grannies used to start laughing before the joke had properly begun. A TV series (Somebody feed Phil) I watch always ends with ‘a joke for Max’, the presenter’s dad who died a couple of years ago. Now, the tears might come unexpectedly, but always there is a space for laughter.

A little two year old showed me how quickly children can change from tears to happiness. She was queuing for the toilet beside me and was rapidly switching from crying to happily playing as she waited. It got me thinking about the way clouds race past, blocking the sun and then revealing it again. How rapidly do your circumstances change from being unbearable to manageable? Do you notice it when the sun shines for a moment in your life after a period of darkness?

Last week I met with a different physio who showed me that things were possible when another one had previously told me they weren’t. It was like the dark clouds moved away and I saw brightness again. I hope that someone comes into your life who dispels the dark and reveals the light again, or perhaps you can do that for somebody else.

Life is ever changing. The challenge is to take hold of the light when you see it, and let it carry you through the dark. The little girl turned to me and played a sweet game of peekaboo where she was peering through her fingers. That is what we need to do; look out of dark times and see the light that is coming. I hope you can see it today.
