And turn it into a good something. Our little niece reminded me that sometimes, when there are no toys, games can still happen. She was running round the house laughing at nothing (that I could see) and was having a grand time when there were no amusements about.
How are you when your hands are empty and your phone is away? It is very easy to hide behind social media or ‘busyness’ when reality gets too great to bear.
When I lie down every night it doesn’t take long before the worries flood in. The news headlines may change, but sadly they are never finished. Flower beds may be weeded but they will come back as soon as we leave them be. To-do lists are the same. Someone once told me to never fear the silence because it will be filled as soon as you leave it.
I am beginning to learn that silence and stillness can only be held for a very short time. Those things are to be treasured, never feared. When I think of my granny, she lived for visitors but needed a record to remind her that no, she wasn’t alone all day; visitors were there.
So many people think that ‘doing’ is what defines us. But who are you when you step away from that? I’m sure retired people have that question on their minds. I have it too, but I remember my dad patting his chest recently saying ‘I am still me’. You are still you, no matter how many professions, qualifications or achievements you can claim. Even when all that falls away or your memory fades, the essence of you still remains.
So next time you are faced with a feeling of nothingness, remember who you are has not changed. God is the Expert at creating something out of nothing. Have a look round you and you’ll see 😊
