The flowery umbrella

When I was a little girl, my mum used to read me a tiny book called ‘The Flowery Umbrella’. It was narrated by a wee girl who imagined all the things she could do if she had a flowery umbrella. Like give an ice-cream to all the children in the world or float across oceans to exotic places. Back then, I was convinced that everything was possible, if you had imagination.

Sitting on my sofa right now, I am so thankful that, even if I can’t physically be there, I could go anywhere in my head. I have had dreams of being able to run and it is tough to wake up to reality. But here’s what I would say to anyone who feels stuck: you can always fly wherever you want. It may feel like a cop-out, but it might be the best you can do

We’re heading to Rome next week and to be honest, the hard reality of that terrifies me. I’ve been there twice before, in more able times. But there is a decision to be made now: be defeated when the impossibility hits, or let the dreams first encountered in my childhood explode and dance on those cobbled streets, defying the what ifs and embracing the dreams I believed in when I was a little girl.

Is there something declared impossible to you holding you back? Close your eyes and let your dreams take you there. Maybe one day, they will actually come true!
