Clinging on

I noticed the final leaf hanging on for dear life on a birch tree in our garden. Do you ever feel like that? Someone once described themselves as ‘ hanging on by my fingertips’. Not great then.

So what do we do when we’re  barely managing? The temptation is to give up, hide away and let the storm rage past. I was reading that Bible story this week where Jesus falls asleep in the boat when the waves are overwhelming the fishermen disciples. Do you ever wish that someone could do something to make your crumbling life better? What I realised when I was reading that story was that everything was made good in the end. Jesus calmed the storm he obviously was always in control of.

These days, there are storm calmers everywhere, if you’re able to spot them. Every night I sit down with my family for dinner and feel joy. Crucial people come round to remind me I am not alone in this. And that leaf shows me that everything has an ounce of strength in this world.

So if you are struggling, look round and ask for help. Remember that there will be a rescue. Jesus was asleep but He’s awake for you right now, telling you not to be afraid. You are not alone.
