Fight for the light

In these dark, freezing January days, light and warmth become a top priority. The short days and long stretches of darkness make it difficult to feel happy about anything. Looking back over this first week of 2025, I have found a lot of aspects of life a real struggle and I know I’m not alone. So what to do?

As the faint sunlight glimmers through the grey clouds, I am reminded that we are not alone, that God is light and in Him there is no darkness (Psalm 139). It might feel right now that darkness has won, but that is not the end of your story. You can’t rally or artificially make your life better all by yourself. Little steps are the way to go. I put my hands round a warm cup of coffee this morning and the sun became so bright I was blinded. Two little things that lifted me. Do you have anything like that? Go make yourself a warm drink, sit on your favourite seat and let the warmth do its work.

I am greatly reassured by the knowledge that there is nothing, no darkness too great, to phase our Prince of Light. You can run to Him and hide in that Truth. There are people strong enough to not flinch at what you are struggling with. If faith is an ask too great for you yet, if all you can say is ‘help’ then start there and watch the light grow stronger as you wait.

It is cold today, and, asking permission, my cleaner lifted a blanket and tucked it round my legs. Kindness can bring light and warmth too. Is there something you can do for someone else today? I’m thinking as well.
