A couple of years ago, we raced past a stone bench with the above title carved onto it but it is still, years later, stopping me in my tracks. Some say it was put there in the early 1900s, others date it to 1880. Whatever its story, the message is timeless. The second instruction is the one I cannot stop thinking about.
We may be forced to stop and sit down, either by tiredness or an inability to keep going but what do we do then? If someone knocked on your door or sat by your bedside when things are tough and told you to be thankful, what would you do? Often when I sit down that’s when the dark feelings settle in, you know the ‘woe is me’ bundle of despair, anxiety and self-pity. But if we are to be thankful, all those negative feelings are stopped in their tracks. You can’t be sorry for yourself and grateful at the same time. Try it and see.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a rest either, even God did it after His work of creating the world!
So, make a list of the things you are thankful for and then simply, without question or guilt, rest!
