I’m always writing about things that get fixed or telling you how to get through them. But what if they are still broken and you’re left with a situation you cannot philosophise your way out of?
The truth is, there is no cure (yet) for this cruel, unpredictable disease I live with. I have to tell you, no matter how brave I come across, this is a hard way to live. So, if faced with an unfixable mess, what should we do?
Again, I’m drawn to the story of Jesus in the storm. The waves are crashing, the disciples are panicking, and He is sleeping! Sometimes, most of the time, we pray and nothing changes. UNTIL, at what feels like the very last minute, Jesus stands up, something changes and the storm is calmed. Many times, when I’m stuck, I call for help and a friend comes.
That’s the crucial thing, you won’t get help if you don’t ask. I wonder what would have happened if the disciples hadn’t woken Jesus up? We’ll never know because they did and He sorted out the storm. It is mortifying, but being helped is sometimes necessary.
If you know someone who is sitting in a mess, sit with them, and if you’re able, help. At times, the only help you can offer is by saying, ‘I see your mess and I’m here’. And I say to you, if you are in a mess, Jesus is with you, and if your friend is in a storm, be with them, in any way you can.
There’s a promise in Matthew 28 that you can be sure of. Jesus says,
‘And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’
It doesn’t sort the mess, it doesn’t calm the storm, but He is with you in it.
That’s a promise.
