My rays of sunshine

I was sitting on the sofa, stuck on what I could write about this week when my daughter came smiling down the stairs. I wondered how many times she had done that, and how many times have I missed out on her smile?

I know I often write about snatches of light in dark times, but how much, how many times, do we miss out because we are just not looking? Yesterday we drove through the countryside, watching the sun set over the horizon and it was beautiful. I could have said no to going anywhere, I could have not looked out the window. But I did.

The sun rises and sets every day. The tide goes in and out. A baby is born. A precious soul starts their journey to heaven. Someone gets a catastrophic diagnosis. A child takes their first step.

Looking out my window right now, I think about all these things and I remember how varied life is. How much we carry. It’s humbling and slightly overwhelming.

Today, keep watching and in the midst of everything, take a moment to see someone smile. It happens every day and, like a precious diamond, or a ray of sunshine, it’s there for you to treasure.
